One Day Introduction to Using Your Digital Camera

This practical, hands-on course taught by photographer and lecturer Aoife Giles will introduce beginners to digital photography and how to get the most out of their cameras.

You will get an introduction to your camera’s semi manual and manual controls and will get to know the potential of your camera, basic camera functions and exposure. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

You will be given the chance to shoot in the streets around the gallery, followed by a review of your work with the course tutor.

Learning Outcomes

– How to work your camera in semi manual and full manual modes

– How to use ISO, shutter speed and aperture to get the correct exposure

– What white balance and metering settings to use in various situations

– File formats (RAW + JPEG) explained

– Overview of focusing, flash, lenses and filters

– Composition: what makes your images interesting and how to achieve creative camera effects.


 

Tutor Aoife Giles

Aoife Giles is a photographer and facilitator from Dublin. She works as a lecturer and in socially engaged arts settings. Mainly collaborating with youth groups she uses photography, film and digital media as a way to encourage critical, political and artistic engagement. She is a member of the Dublin City Artists Panel and holds an MA: Art in the Digital World from NCAD and a Certificate in Youth Arts from NYCI and Maynooth University.

Where does the course take place?
This workshop is held in the Gallery of Photography LightRoom, which is located on the top floor of our building in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

In order to secure a place we advise that you book well in advance as places are heavily oversubscribed. You may book by calling into the Gallery in person, or by telephone. We regret that we cannot accept bookings by email – please telephone to check availability of places.
