Introduction to Documentary Photography with Kate Nolan

New course starting on February 4th, continues every Tuesday until March 10th 2020
Intermediate/Advanced class: Students must have working knowledge of digital photography and cameras.
This course will examine the practice of documentary photography, focusing on the visual narrative and exploring the work of photographers in this tradition. Practical techniques are explored and students are shown how to research a topic, plan, photograph, and edit a photo story.
1. Production of a short-term documentary photo project
2. Introduction to documentary photographers historical and contemporary
3. Identifying different concepts and visual strategies to tell your story
This course is guided by Kate Nolan, an internationally renowned visual artist from Ireland.
This course is divided into weekly projects related to a final photo story. The schedule for the course is as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to Photographic Projects // Discuss ideas for project // Writing a Proposal
Week 2: Photo Project: Visual Strategies // Research // Create Shooting List
You will create narratives with visual strategies, pitch project ideas and starter images
Week 3: Composition: Building an image with intent // Portraiture techniques
You will break down images into visual parts and discuss portraiture, representation and identity through a group critique
Week 4: Narrative: How to create a narrative thread // Text + Image
Week 5: Editing and Sequencing: Show/discuss outcomes for work; exhibition, book, installations
Week 6: Outcome and review: Review technical and creative skills learned over previous weeks // Discuss project created over 6 weeks // Intro to post production.
Skills learned throughout the past 6 weeks will be reviewed, the final project will be discussed, and you will be introduced to lightroom, Photoshop, and the next steps you can take for your photo story
Students needs will be accessed previous to the start of the course through questionnaire.
Gallery of Photography online platforms (instagram/facebook) will be utilised to feature students work.
The cost of this workshop is €220 for non-members and €210 for members of the Gallery of Photography.
