Introduction to Documentary Photography with Kate Nolan
Tuesday Evenings, 7 – 9:30pm
This is an intermediate class intended to examine the practice of documentary photography. By taking this course, you will learn skills such as researching, planning, photographing, and editing your photo story.
This course is guided by Kate Nolan, an internationally renowned visual artist from Ireland. This course occurs in our Reframing the Border exhibition space, where Nolan’s images will showcase the physical and psychological impact of borders on the individuals surrounded by them.
This course is divided into weekly projects related to a final photo story. The schedule for the course is as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to Photographic Projects
You will be introduced to contemporary art practices and asked to discuss 2 project ideas
Week 2: Visual Strategies and Research Timeline
You will create narratives with visual strategies and will pitch project ideas and starter images
Week 3: Composition: Building an Image with Intent
You will break down images into visual parts and discuss portraiture, representation and identity through a group critique
Week 4: How to Work with Natural Light and Flash
You will be introduced to practical techniques in terms of using light to emote the viewer and enhancing images through the use of lighting
Week 5: Editing and Sequencing
Editing techniques will be presented to you through a group critique and outcomes of the final project will be discussed
Week 6: Outcome and Review: Introduction to Post-Production
Skills learned throughout the past 6 weeks will be reviewed, the final project will be discussed, and you will be introduced to lightroom, Photoshop, and the next steps you can take for your photo story
The course will occur from August 14, 2018 until September 18, 2018. Sessions will be held every Tuesday evening from 7 P.M. until 9:30 P.M for a total of 6 sessions at the Gallery of Photography.
The cost of this workshop is €190 for non-members and €180 for members of the Gallery of Photography.
