Bill Doyle’s Ireland December 6 2007 to January 31 2008 Bill Doyle is one of Ireland’s best-loved photographers. His work has a lightness of touch, a warmth and humour that has earned him the title “Ireland’s Cartier-Bresson”. For this long-awaited retrospective of his work, the Gallery of Photography has commissioned new archive-quality prints of Bill’s iconic works. Selected by the photographer, they are hand-printed and gold-toned by Bill’s long-term print collaborator, Hetty Walsh. The exhibition, sponsored by AIB Group, features over seventy images. The subjects range from the spirited characters of Bill’s native Dublin to the rugged beauty of the west of Ireland. Signed prints of the work are available for sale. A new book has been published by the Gallery of Photography. It includes 40 images and an introductory essay by Gerald Dawe. About the photographer Bill was born in Dublin in 1926 and has lived here all his life. From an early age Bill was involved in photography, but it wasn't until after he won the Daily Telegraph Magazine Photographer of the Year Award in London, in 1967, that he took up freelance photography as a fulltime career. He won this for a collection of photographs on the Aran Islands, many of which are included in this retrospective.
