Is this course for me?
The course is held on one evening per week, over four weeks. Through studio sessions and practical advice, course participants will successfully complete their own photo essay.  Participants will be required to work in their own time to complete this body of work. A basic level of proficiency in photography is required to get the most from this course. It is not recommended for complete beginners.

During the classroom sessions, students’ work will be edited and reviewed. Each week students will be introduced to different aspects of documentary photography, learning new techniques and how to put them into practice.

Learn from a Working Professional
The course will be led by award winning photojournalist Kim Haughton who has photographed stories in over 20 countries and whose work has been published worldwide.

What does the course entail?
Over the four sessions, course participants will shoot a photo essay on a subject of their choosing. Half of the course will be dedicated to mentoring participants through this process and learning how to effectively communicate with subjects. With informal discussions, participants will be guided through story formation, visual literacy and the development of their own personal vision. An introduction to entry-level multimedia storytelling and the future of documentary photography will also be discussed. Basic postproduction and digital editing processes will also feature.

What do I need to bring?
Participants will need to have an idea for a story that they wish to shoot and a digital camera. It doesn’t matter if your idea is not fully developed, we can work on this. You can do this course with the cheapest camera on the market, or a top of the range Nikon or Canon SLR. Participants will be shown how to take great photographs and shown how the photographer’s skill is more important than the camera itself.

What do we supply?
Each course participant is allocated their own computer terminal. We have 6 iMac Pro machines, installed with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Where does the course take place?
This course is held in our new LightRoom facility at the Gallery of Photography in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
