Biography: Born in Belfast in 1965, Paul Seawright’s early work from the 1990s investigated the fraught political terrain of his hometown. The 'Orange Order' and 'Police Force' series were exhibited at the Gallery of Photography in 1992 and 1995. In his recent work, Seawright has moved away from an overtly Irish context, focusing on what he has termed a 'generic malevolent landscape' in uninhabited spaces at the edge of cities.
Paul has exhibited in many venues throughout Europe and North and South America and he represented Wales in the 2003 Venice Biennale. Awards include the prestigious Irish Museum of Modern Art/Glen Dimplex Prize in 1997 and the Ville de Paris Artist Award in 1999. He is represented in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, the Imperial War Museum, London, the Art Institute of Chicago and the International Center of Photography, New York among many others. He is currently Professor of Photography at the University of Ulster.
The piece in this exhibition is from the Orange Order series, 1991.
