• Artist: David Farrell
  • Biography: Born in Dublin in 1961, David read Chemistry at UCD graduating with a Ph.D. in 1987. Currently working as a lecturer in photography in IADT-Dun Laoghaire. He works independently and on 'communion' projects with Gogo della Luna (Gudòk). David received the European Publishers Award for Photography in 2001 for Innocent Landscapes which received its Irish premiere at the Gallery of Photography that year. In 2004 he participated in the ‘European Eyes on Japan’ project photographing the Iwate prefecture. ‘Crow’, his collaborative multimedia film with composer Benjamin Dwyer, was premiered at the National Concert Hall Dublin in 2005. He has received numerous other awards and commissions, including a major Project Award from the Arts Council and the Central Bank commission, which was exhibited in the Gallery of Photography in 2006. He was an invited artist at Houston FotoFest 2006 and published his second book Nè vicino Nè lontano. A Lugo (Punctum) in autumn 2007. He recently exhibited at the Pingyao International Festival of Photography, Pingyao, China and ‘David Farrell - Elusive Moments’ a major documentary by Donald Taylor Black (Poolbeg Productions) was premiered this year at the Cork Film Festival 2008. The piece in this exhibition is from a commission for the Rome International Festival of Photography in 2008 to photograph in the Lazio region the via Francigena, a pilgrimage route dating back to the 12th century. It is an archival inkjet print.
